Privacy policy

This privacy policy says what Selfspecs keeps, where it keeps it and how to delete it: your results stay in your browser, and there are no accounts.

What stays on your device

When you finish a test, the result is saved in your browser's own storage on the device you are using. So are the answers of a questionnaire you have not finished, the settings you choose, such as light or dark colours, the notices you have closed and the tallies of the click counter. Everything Selfspecs saves has a name that begins with ss: in that storage.

None of it is sent to us. If you clear the data of your browser, or use another browser or device, it is not there. You can save a copy of your results as a file.

What we do not collect

There are no accounts. We do not ask for your name, your email address or your age, and we do not know who you are. A result is never part of a web address, so sharing a link shares only the page and never your result. Results are never put into statistics, adverts or a request to any server.

Selfspecs does not knowingly collect anything about anyone, including children: it asks for no personal details and has no accounts. What is counted about a visit, if anything, is said under "Counting visitors" below.

What your browser asks for

To show you a page, your browser asks our web host for the page's files, as it does for every website. The host may keep ordinary records of those requests, such as the time and the page. Nothing in them carries a result. While a test is running, nothing is fetched at all.

Advertisements

Advertisements appear on some pages only if the site has been set up with an advertising account. They never appear on this page, on the other pages about the site, while a test is running or on the questionnaires that ask more sensitive questions. When advertisements are on, the advertising provider asks for your consent first and uses its own cookies under its own policy, which we do not control.

Counting visitors

This site uses Google Analytics to count page views, so that we can see which pages are read.

For each page you open, it tells Google which page it was, roughly where you are (the place your internet address suggests) and what device and browser you use.

Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to recognise a visit that comes back. Its advertising features are switched off.

It never receives your results, your answers or anything you type. A result is never part of a web address, so the address Google sees never holds one.

It is switched off on the personality-sensitive tests (political values, self-esteem and the dark triad), on My results (the spec sheet) and while any test is running. There, nothing at all is sent to Google.

To opt out, install Google's opt-out add-on for your browser (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout), block cookies from this site in your browser's settings, or turn on your browser's tracking protection. The rest of the site works the same.

Offline use

After your first visit, Selfspecs can open without a connection. Your browser keeps copies of the site's own files for that, in a cache and a small background script called a service worker. They are the site itself and not your results, and you can remove them in your browser's settings.

Delete your data

You can delete everything Selfspecs has saved on this device with the button below. It removes your results, unfinished questionnaires and settings from this browser. Because nothing is kept anywhere else, that is all there is to delete. Clearing the data of this site in your browser's settings does the same.

If you have a question about your data, use the contact us page, and read the terms of use for what the site is for.
