Behind those simple words is one of the most complicated systems on the planet. The air around the earth is always moving, pushed by the heat of the sun and turned by the spinning of the earth itself. Understanding that movement well enough to say what tomorrow will bring has taken scientists more than a century.\nThe sun does not warm the earth evenly. Near the equator its light arrives almost straight down, so each patch of ground receives a great deal of energy. Near the poles the same light arrives at a low angle and is spread over a much larger area. Warm air rises, cool air sinks, and the difference between the hot middle of the planet and its cold ends drives great currents of air that circle the globe.\nWater makes the picture richer. When the sun warms the sea, some of the water turns into vapour and rises with the warm air. As the air climbs, it cools, and the vapour turns back into tiny drops of water. Billions of those drops together form a cloud. If the drops grow heavy enough, they fall as rain, or as snow when the air is cold. In this way water is carried from the oceans to the land, where it feeds rivers, lakes and every growing thing.\nFor most of history, people predicted the weather by watching the sky and remembering what had happened before. A red sky in the evening, a ring around the moon, swallows flying low: such signs were passed from parents to children. Some of them hold a little truth, because they describe changes in the air that often come before a change in the weather. None of them, however, can say what will happen in three days.\nModern forecasts begin with measurements. Thousands of weather stations on land and at sea record the temperature, the pressure of the air, the wind and the amount of water in the air, several times a day. Balloons carry instruments high into the sky, and satellites watch the clouds from far above. All of these numbers are sent to large computers, which use the laws of physics to calculate how the air will move in the hours and days ahead.\nEven the best computers cannot be perfect. The air is so sensitive that a very small error in the starting numbers can grow into a large error a week later. For that reason forecasters run the same calculation many times, each with slightly different starting numbers. If most of the results agree, the forecast can be trusted. If they spread far apart, the forecasters know that the future is uncertain, and they say so.\nToday a forecast for the next day is right most of the time, and a forecast for five days ahead is about as good as a forecast for one day was forty years ago. That progress is easy to forget, because we notice the days when the forecast was wrong far more than the many days when it was right.",1791315170699]
